UMETHULO SS 22

UMETHULO

SS-22

Umethulo is the ceremony that marks the end of a mourning period. Following the death of a male household head, the woman is traditionally expected to mourn (ukuzila) for six to twelve months. The mourning period entails restriction to daily routine, dress (only restricted to wearing one colour), and social relations. At the end of the mourning period a ceremony (UMETHULO) is held to remove the mourning clothes and to mark a new beginning.
